To quote James Rolfe of film web site Cinemassacre, when you dive into the very depths of any enthusiast’s world – be it video games, wine cask manufacturers, or Canadian surrealist pornography – you’ll find “hidden gems or… turd[s] covered in vomit.”1 German black metal trio Sun Worship is the hidden gem that makes delving into the relative unknown a worthwhile activity. Surpass Eclipse is a two-track EP that An Out Recordings originally released in a run of 300 (and later reissued in a run of 318) 12-inch vinyls and is currently available as a pay-what-you-want download on the group’s Bandcamp page.
Surpass Eclipse is a semi-progressive affair and one that inspires confidence in the new(-ish) band’s future. Colin Marston of artsy metal bands Krallice and Dysrhythmia mastered the album; that fact alone should be enough to clue the curious listener in as to whether or not they will enjoy Sun Worship. “Castle High” is a fairly straightforward track close to the Norwegian style of nonstop riffing filled with heavy tremolo and blast-beats, but with distinctly melodic songwriting in vein of Nachtmystium. “Eclipse” features an extended break in the middle of the song and a two-minute outro of feedback and low-tempo percussion; either technique is familiar to fans of the US Black Metal genre, such as found on Wolves in the Throne Room’s Diadem of Twelve Stars, Downfall of Gaia’s Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay, and Ash Borer’s Bloodlands.
1. Castle High – (5:05) – ★★★★☆
2. Eclipse – (8:33) – ★★★☆☆
