Cripple Bastards – Nero in Metastasi

Cripple Bastards - Nero in Metastasi

Italian grindcore1 group Cripple Bastards exist much in the same way now as they did twenty years ago: in dirty and sludgy depravity. Nero in Metastasi is their 2014 studio album. The majority of tracks play up the death metal side of grindcore and downplay the hardcore punk.2 Three vocal styles are used: a hoarse scream, a hardcore yelp, and a guttural growl. There are a couple shout-alongs that bring out the hardcore side, such as on “Promo-Parassita” – which is quite similar to old work by The Casualties. Songs are classically microscopic, with a requisite long, experimental ditty as the penultimate track.

Grindcore has its issues with creativity,3 which may or may not be a problem for the listener depending on their expectations going into the genre. Nero in Metastasi is not the most creative pattern of work, with plenty of recycled riffs and blast-beats gracing the tracklisting. The best tracks are the ones that play the three vocal styles against each other or switch up composition to make more than a hackneyed chug-chug-WHOOP. Overall, Nero in Metastasi is a fun grindcore album, made all the better by being in goddamn Italian.
