Alghazanth – Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity

Alghazanth - Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity

Alghazanth is a symphonic black metal band formed toward the end of the Second Wave of Black Metal in the ’90s. Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity1 boasts enormous influence by Emperor.2 Tracks are more melodic than one would expect from Scandinavians – think very early Cradle of Filth. Not so much screams as high-pitched growls here; deeper ones appear on “Of a Stormgrey Vision.” The percussion certainly doesn’t hide black metal’s blast beat fetish, but most songs have passages with slower tempos. Alghazanth do well in the realm of songwriting.

From the requisite ambient intro track to the blasphemous imagery, this is very much a ’90s Norwegian black metal album. As per the genre’s symphonic strain, Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity‘s tracks are almost entirely backed by an icy – even ghostly – synthesizer. Alghazanth do little different than their colleagues, but it is done well.

1Isn’t it so sweet when Scandinavians use archaic English in slightly incorrect form? Adds so much charm. Who’s a cute little church-burner! You are! That’s right, you are!
2Especially their first two albums.
3Who?? Who awaits?? TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW!!
