JSHIH – Interval

JSHIH - Interval

JSHIH is a bedroom electronic musician out of Orlando, FL with an ear for spacey soundscapes and ambient techno. Chopped and screwed vocal samples appear on “2,” “Lost Time,” and “Annie,” recalling the most downtempo Ninja Tune releases; they work rather well, and the chillbeat percussion is head-noddable.1 At its best, Interval has the same “prettiness” as early Aphex Twin ambient works.

Brevity is the key here: one-third of the songs don’t go past one hundred seconds. However, that’s also Interval‘s pitfall. This isn’t Donuts or FlyLo; the tracks don’t warrant their brevity because there is neither tension nor a statement. Contrast “Heart Race” with “Lost Time,” the latter of which is successful. Additionally, several songs are loudly produced (e.g. “Heart Race”) or have too many flourishes to breathe (again, “Heart Race”), which is compounded by track length.2

Bedroom music is supposed to sound under-developed, but Interval has the same issues as Karen O’s Crush Songs: short tunes that are unfinished, not unpolished. It’s got a few pretty tracks, though. Can’t deny Interval that grace, as shown by the four-star and five-star tracks..
