Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American

Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American

Hard to believe that Bleed American1 was Jimmy Eat World’s fourth album after almost a decade of existence. The standout cuts are ebullient pop punk anthems that defy any semblance of age; the band was getting older, perhaps, but certainly not getting old. The songs are streamlined from windy predecessor Clarity, with an immaculate production that facilitates its mainstream appeal. Unfortunately, it’s mired by several ballads that try too hard to tug emo kids’ heartstrings.2 Otherwise, the album has the best use of “whoa” since Mark, Tom, and Scott hit up a dude ranch in ’97. Cute, happy, and immensely sing-alongable.

1Changed to Jimmy Eat World after 9/11 to avoid misinterpretation. Yep, this album’s about four months older than 9/11. If it were a kid, it could get its learner’s permit next year.
2“you rip my heart right out” yeeeeech
3One of the first songs I learned on the guitar! Good times…
